Hmm.  Indeed.  I backported the improvement but not asmodai's fix to it. 
Jordan -- I'd like to go ahead and backport this fix prior to 4.2-RELEASE,
with your permission.  Sorry about the slow response time on this -- I've
been travelling for the last two weeks and it got lost in my mailbox.
