I finally got my DELL 4100 (933MHz P-III) running FreeBSD well enough to
start working on my project of porting some Linux software to FreeBSD.

I have Windows ME on one IDE disk, Linux on a second IDE disk, and FreeBSD
on a SCSI disk. I've figured out how to mount the Windows partitions under
FreeBSD but what I really want to do is mount the Linux ext2 partition(s) so
that I
can keep the software I'm porting in one spot.

Is this possible? I see some hints in the documentation that it might be,
but I don't seem to have the right software loaded or the right "magic"
commands to
make it work. If its possible can someone give me some pointers?

Thanks,

Brad

Having just done the same thing I can suggest two things...

First, you need a window manager. The command to start it goes in .xinitrc
(no & on the last line). I used KDE.

Second, my XFree86 -configure output didn't include commands for the monitor
HorizSync and VertRefresh nor did it include any display modes so first I
got a 640x480 desktop and then (after first fixing the sync and refresh
rates) I got a 1900x1400 (or so) desktop. Try reading text on that one!

Using xf86cfg didn't work (core dump), xf86config doesn't have GeForce 2
listed so I ended up manually editing the XF86Config file.

Regards,

Brad

Subject: Elsa Gladiac + XFree86 4.1.0 problem

Folks,

Let's see if I can sufficiently describe what is going on. I
installed FreeBSD 4.3 using only the "User" option. Then I manually
installed XFree86 4.1.0 using "sh Xinstall.sh". All went find. Then I ran
"XFree86 -configure", went fine. XFree86Config reads that the card detected
is an ELSA Gladiac MX and the driver to be used is "nv", but is also
detected the card on BusID: PCI instead of AGP (not sure if it is supposed
to say AGP anyway). But when I start "XFree86 -xfconfig
/root/XFree86Config.new" the server sort of starts up, but then all I see
is a grayish screen with a black X which has a white border (my cursor). I
can move that cursor around, but that is all can do. The server responds
to CtrlAtlBackspace, but not to CtrlAlt+. When shutting the server down
with CtrlAltBackspace no errors appear, looks like a normal shutdown (as
far as I can tell).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Peter
