Hello there, Well, I know the subject line leaves alot to be desired, but I couldn't=20 really think of any other way to describe this. Please excuse any=20 ignorance in advance as I am new to FreeBSD and the lengthy explanation. Yesterday I was in XFree86 + KDE, happly doing things... I then tried to=20 open another program, and the program showed up in the "tray" at the=20 bottom, with the spinner beside it... but after about 30 seconds, it=20 disappeared and the program never actually opened... I tried the program=20 again (it was an kterm session btw), and same result. I tried several=20 other programs and same thing for all of them. I thought that maybe FreeBSD was becoming unstable (no flames please, I=20 realize that this doesn't happen often, as it does in the WinXX world), s= o=20 I restarted and logged in again (as a user, not root). I then went to=20 start XFree86 (using startx), and it just sat there trying to start, no=20 error messages or anything displayed on the screen. After about 60 secon= ds=20 I hit CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and X started up. I tried running some programs= =20 and I was getting the same results as previously. After trying things, I finally discovered that the DNS of my provider was= =20 down (on a cable connection), as I could ping sites with IP, but not with= =20 name resolution. So, for some reason it seems that I have some type of configuration/insta= ll=20 problem, as it seems for me to be able to run X or programs in X, that it= =20 is using the DNS server for resolution. I confirmed this today my just unplugging the network cable and I had the= =20 same results as previously. Has anyone seen this before? Could someone point me in the right directi= on=20 on how to troubleshoot or fix this? Your help greatly appreciated. David.
