Hi, Brad.

Hmm. I knew someone would come out with your answers. No, I infact
custom ordered mine directly from factory choosing haradwares that was best
supported under Linux/BSD. I don't use prepackaged systems like Dell,
Compaq, Gateway etc. There are no such devices as Win modem etc. in my
laptop. And, none of the FreeBSD developers were able to get my KENSINGTON MIAB OPTICAL
USB mouse to work on this machine. Motherboard is INTEL PII 440/BX based
Chipset. I've sent in Kldstat and Dmesg list quite ago as request and
still haven't heard from them since. Also, I have no answer for you
regarding teTeX, Mozilla, XFree86 not taking long long time to install from
your machine! Even installing teTeX straight from FreeBSD CD takes good 10-20
minutes for package add completition. Now, if you didn't know, "async" option
is the fastest option there is. Softupdates closely perform to the level of async
option without having to use async! I compile XFree86 from source tar balls. It
takes good 20 minutes (I haven't timed it with stop watch so give +-
something) to unpack and before it starts to ask you questions of options
for XFree86. Under Redhat it was atleast 10x faster! And, it's true KDE
and GNOME only work 90% on FreeBSD. GNOME 1.4 compatibility is even worse.
And, if you can get JAVA to work, it must haven't taken unnecessary steps that
I really don't have time to configure as a non programmer. I agree Windows is
unstable (although not necessarily 2000) but Redhat hat is rock solid and fast based
on my little experience with it so far.

The best place to test your JAVA with KDE's konqueror is to go to AOL
website and try their JAVA version AIM. I think I tried all java's
available in ports collection and none works with konqueror. ** And, no,
I'm not a gamer either. But, I don't like wasting my fast graphics board
either. **
