As far as I can remember /usr/ports/balsa can read mutt's
and pine's files. But please check yourself.

The actual solution was, that all gui-clients are far to
slow to follow lists like this one (nothing to say about
newsgroups) and I kept using pine in an xterm.
But of course you should find out yourself.
