A lot of these cards won't show up properly if Plug and Play is 
enabled in your BIOS, or if your card's EEPROM is set to PnP 
configuration.  What kernel are you using?  GENERIC probably has 
support for that.  Did you disable it during install?  Perhaps there is 
an unnecessary driver consuming resources that should be allotted 
to your 3Com card.  What output does 'dmesg' produce?
