I went the slightly more frustrating but cheaper route of buying the Cyclades TS2000 on eBay and fashioning my own cables; I did finally get them working with regular old CAT5 patch cables. The RJ45-DB9F modular adapter pinout that I used is detailed in the mailing list: http://docs.FreeBSD.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=804788+0+cureebsd-stable The crux of the problem is that FreeBSD doesn't assert carrier on serial ports that aren't serving as the serial console so this has to be done "by the cable".
