I installed FreeBSD 8.0.   Then I followed the directions on installing Gnome2.  I typed pkg_add -r gnome2.  Then I added the line

gnome_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf.  But to no avail.  Gnome doesn't boot.  Only the terminal boots up.  I also get this error during boot: 
gdm-binary[1285]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors
