What happend to the rule that a username must not begin with a digit?
Sometimes, I do miss the good old days :)

What about systems with a lot of users and/or centralized databases (NIS
and friends)? I'm afraid that this change may cause unneccessary delays.

I'd prefer to do a "is this an uid range"-check first and the "could this
be a username"-check second. In other words, along these lines:

if (((cp = strchr(*argv, '-')) != NULL) &&
	(strspn(*argv, "0123456789") == (size_t)(cp - *argv)) &&
	(strspn(++cp, "0123456789") == strlen(*argv) - (size_t)(cp - *argv)) &&
	(getpwnam (*argv) == NULL)) {
	/* uid range entered, use it */
} else {
	/* Not an uid range */
}

Comments?
