No PR that I know of, but it was discussed.

Add the following after the SUBDIR listings:

.for dir in ${SUBDIR}
.if exists(${.CURDIR}/${dir}/Makefile)
SUBDIR_EXISTS += ${dir}
.endif
.endfor
SUBDIR = ${SUBDIR_EXISTS}

Can also be used for each category.  I used it for a trimmed tree.
