alright. fixed the problem. it seems some files in /usr/src got corrupted. funny thing though `svn --no-ignore status` didn't reveal anything. after deleting /usr/src and doing a complete pull of the sources and re-compiling the nvidia and vbox driver everything's back to normal. sorry for the noise. alex
