a reason seems to be missing from above exchange...

the reason for the error is that '-t <key type>' option was added to
openssh version 2.9 which is missing from 2.3 (the openssh version 
that's get installed w/ freebsd 4.4-release).

btw, when last time i checked, the 2.9 version also supported 2.3's 
type options.
