Yes, it is a direct descendant of 4.4BSD-Lite2. It's called "Unix-like"
because "Unix" is a registered trademark...

X-Windows (XFree86) is available for FreeBSD, but it's not a part of it, per
se. Not installing it won't cause any harm.

The FreeBSD kernel is it's own, not the Mach kernel.
