If you will see my url you will know why 'ic' doesn't work with ttydX.
So you need to run by cron such script instead:

#!/bin/sh

chat -V				\
	""		"AT"		\
	"OK"		"ATZ"		\
	"OK"		"ATS0=1"	\
	"OK"		""		\
< /dev/cuaa1 > /dev/cuaa1
-----

Note in this script you have to use cuaaX.
This script can be modified to set autoanswer
and to disable it.
