I'm also a disappointed Dell Inspiron 8100 owner
with lack of NVIDIA support up to now but your message caused me to
lookup again the

FreeBSD Nvidia Driver Initiative page

and there seems to be good news:

Is your bad experience already based on the above newly ported linux
driver?
