I've used both, but not with FreeBSD. I've seen mechnical switchers blow motherboard keyboard interfaces, so I'm not hot on their use, but I'm not a doom-and-gloom type, because I've seen cases where they never caused problems either. If you do go with the mechanical switchbox, make sure all BIOS's are set up to allow booting if the keyboard is not detected. I don't know if FreeBSD will handle it if you plug in the keyboard after the fact, though.
