If your running FreeBSD for the first time, I'd say go with 2.2.8 - We run
both 3.0 and 2.2.1 through 2.2.8 here, 3.0 is run on a couple of 'development'
boxes, the 2.2.X stable releases run on our 'production' (i.e. someone gets to
scream if it fails) type boxes...

3.0 has more 'cutting edge' (i.e. up to date) features, but generally isn't
run / tested by as many people as the 2.2.X-Stable releases (such as 2.2.8)...

In reality our 3.0 boxes don't crash too often, but they do crash more often
than our 2.2.1 through 2.2.8 boxes (which so far, counting the 410+ days
uptime) have actually never crashed... ;-)
