I tracked this down to the e169 randomly detaching when the stats port
was open.  I'd previously (accidently) noticed that unplugging the
e169 whilst it was in use would hang my system.  Upgrading to a more
recent -current has fixed the problem - the e169 no longer randomly
detaches and if I accidently pull the e169 out whilst it is in use,
the system no longer hangs.

My solution was to enable watchdog(4) - which gave me a panic & crashdump.
