6.2-STABLE is newer than 6.2-RELEASE.

The STABLE line of development continues on from 6.2-RELEASE and works towards
6.3-RELEASE.

So if 6.2-R does not support a device it can be that 6.2-S does, since it gets
backports from 7-CURRENT and other sort of patches to its development tree.

Users can install 6.2-R and then using cvsup or csup have the ability to
track/follow the 6.2-S branch.

Hope this clarifies the situation a bit.
