Actually, for i4b, it comes from the keyboard of the undersigned - we 
needed a mechanism to ship boxes so that the out-of-the-box default 
configuration would work anywhere as shipped. And this turned out to 
work, so there it is :-)

I did need to fish out some AVM hardware initialization parameters from 
the linux drivers, though, as the available AVM programming 
documentation was somewhat lacking in places, and AVM recommended their 
linux driver as reference material. You can see some of the 
linux-derived register access horrors still lurking in the iavc (Isdn 
AVm Chipset/Controller, the CAPI link layer driver for the AVMs) header 
files...

It can also be encoded as an empty structure. It was just more 
convenient to use "0" as the default local number in isdnd 
configuration and handle it like any other number in isdnd and the 
driver.
