There were a couple of threads about this problem here. Try searching
the list for a thread I started about problems with beryl.

The short version is: If you have an ATI card, forget it, if you have an
Intel card, it might work, and if you have an nVidia card, it will
probably work with one version of their proprietary driver or another.
