Because the in-kernel infrastructure for arb. data retrieval isn't
there yet.  Sysctl is an OK start, but it's effectively fairly static.
Part of the "big bad nasty config model" I keep talking about includes
an attempt to deal with this - I'm not sure if it'll go down well with
the masses though.

Is there serious interest in this?  I'd be happy to discuss further...
