to follow up on this, if I roll back to the version I had installed
previously (6.2.72), the screen update problems go away. I tried rolling
back to a few other interim releases, and still had the update problems.
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 2891720 Nov 4 10:24 vim-6.2.120.tbz
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 2892715 Nov 4 10:18 vim-6.2.126.tbz
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 2893095 Nov 4 09:36 vim-6.2.139.tbz

those 3 versions exhibited the same symptoms. So, I'm assuming this bug
was introduced between .72 and .120
