Well, I've absolutely no solution for you but can only 
say that I plugged a brand new AHA-3940UW card into my machine
an hour ago - then I installed the latest version of FBSD 
(2.2.6) from FTP and it recognised the card immediately. 
The controller was definitely there on the list of options 
in the setup utility.
