I have a 1542b that seems to have about 4 places to set the irq of the board
via jumpers. If the jumpers don't all match it will work under most OSs,
but not FreeBSD. FreeBSD requires that the jumpers be set just right or it
will not pick up the card. The adaptec site has some pretty cryptic docs
for this card. I will tell you how mine is set:

J5 set 8 and 10.
J6 set 1
J7 set 2
J8 set 2 4 6
J9 set 2 6 11

This topic has been discussed recently here....you should've found a thread
very similar to this in the archives.

Couple other things....

1) My card is from 1987. I don't know how old yours is, but if it from the
same era I might recommend an upgrade.

2) I seem to remember someone telling me that these cards were known to be
slow under FreeBSD. If you find that your's has bad performance I might
recommend an upgrade.

3) I don't know what the differences are (if any) between a 1542b and
1542cf. It is possible that none of the above applies to your card.

Hope this helps,
Josh
