In most cases, they were unable to transfer data.  In two cases, there
was mechanical failure.

That is a stupid statement.  Carried to its logical conclusion, you
could never complain about anything if there was some really expensive
alternative.

Another stupid statement.  If there's one thing that needs to be
reliable, it's backups.
