As long as your ports tree is not very old, you will be able to use it in newer system but this is not always guaranteed. It is, however, possible to checkout ports tree from the date you specified with either cvsup or cvs. My personal suggestion is that when upgrading, try to build a new environment from scratch (say, everything is brand new) with ports named by 'pkg_info -qoa' on old system, and have the new environment reveal potential issues before making major updates to running system. Another possible approach is to update from time to time but this could cause you a lot of downtime.
