	No... a Winmodem will not work under FreeBSD in any way shape or
form. The problem is, the modem uses the system CPU and memory for it's
operation. To do this you have to have special drivers. Since every
Winmodem manufacturer assumes that their product goes into a Windows based
PC, they wrote drivers. On the same token, it's not worth anyone's time to
write FreeBSD drivers for the wide range of Winmodems on the market. As
every single one is different! Besides, you're 10 times better off
spending and extra $30 and getting a real modem.
	Now... as for your original problem, it's possible that your modem
is not being reconized by the PNP driver because it's not a 'compatible'
modem. (Supra, USR mostly) I had to have someone add the PNP ID string
from my Boca Modem into the PNP code. So... your answer is probally to
still look into investing in a new modem.
