Thanks.  I will try the startup script.  I just recompiled pango and
still have the same trouble. 

I uncommented the line in /etc/ttys, though, and ran it directly.  It
worked!!! 

I got some warning messages, though: 

bash-2.05a# /usr/X11R6/bin/gdm -nodaemon
(process:322): GLib-WARNING **: Need to have NULL encoding to set the
bufferingstate of the channel.
