I was as confused about DNS as you were until I read "DNS and Bind" by Paul
Albitz and Cricket Liu 
(Published by O'Reilly & Associates; ISBN: 1565925122).  You can buy it
from all good technical book stores or order it from amazon.com and
countless other online booksellers.  It's worth the investment.
