For 2000 we found the plain text switch to be:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters

Add value EnablePlainTextPassword = 1


This is different from NT, which is different from 95/98.  (Yes, what a pain.)
