Well, this is true - it doesn't. It just deletes them. :) Personally, I think this could be in pkg-message, along with a warning when they start the make process... I can't remember the last time I looked at the handbook to build and install a port - not that it couldn't be there as well. Perhaps it could even check if data.default has been changed since last install, and if it has, stop and ask the user to run install again with some sort of FORCE flag.
