I can attest to a flawless XFree86-4 build and configure.  Im running it 
right now.  The hard part was waiting a couple of hours for it to 
compile.  What is the NO_X=true for in make.conf.  I just used 
XFREE86_VERSION=4 and I haven't any problems so far (knock on wood)....
