I tried this change which would cause iaf_read_pmc() to return -2 in this case
instead of a large number.  I added some additional debugging so I could verify
this was being triggered in my testing.  It did seem to make things last
longer, but in at least one of my test runs I still saw pmcstat eventually stop
getting samples.
