First, you should not just accept that the network just stops. Fix the problem at the source. To aswer your question though: One way is to 'kill 1' then exit at the console to cause a restart. Another way is some incantation of 'ifconfig' that I can't recall. Look in one of the /etc/rc scripts for the right way to do this.
