ESPECIALLY stuff like this GMP thing.  There aren't very many simple
ways to distinguish between base and ports when it's the same thing but
a different version.  :(

The only solution that seems to be sensible would be to put most of the
base system in packages, a suggestion that JKH himself has brought up.

Getting the work done is another matter..
