Two things you might try: 1) plaympeg (it's part of the smpeg package as well), which should give you better error messages. 2) Get the SDL-1.1.4 from the web site, and try to install it. The sdl development port *is* for development, and tends to break. I know sdl-devel-1.1.5 was broken; 1.1.6 may also be broken.
