Is this happening after you recompiled your kernel? If so then you did something wrong. Try this: When it boots to the "Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command promt."... hit the other key. Type 'unload' then 'load kernel.GENERIC' then 'boot' That will boot the GENERIC kernel... perhaps that will work.
