That is not correct - recent versions of the sysutils/cromwell port
support passing kernel environment parameters. As for your
/boot/xboxlinux.cfg, use:

title FreeBSD/xbox
kernel /boot/GENERIC/kernel
append hw.ata.ata_dma=0

And it should work. I think I forgot to release ISO images featuring
this :-(
