You can also install neither, and just run a window manager. If you're
used to a command line, you might prefer an environment that's not
cluttered by lots icons that need to be explained, or needing to learn
a new language to configure the thing.

There are number of small, fast window managers in the x11-wm ports
tree. I personally chose lwm, but that may not be for you.
