I suppose I must sheepishly choose Option #2, but could you tell me where to go
to suggest similar updates and improvements in the future, particularly if the
maintainer is listed as ports@FreeBSD.org?

I've gotten scolded by maintainers for contacting them directly and told to add
the request as a bug report, and then re-scolded when adding it into the old
GNATS system.
