Sorry Crist for not being specific.
I was using FreeBSD 3.1 on i386. The installation
probably is not a complete one (can't even use vi
editor). If I have to compile one, I need to download
from the ftp server. 

Do you think reconfigure the boot manager using
sysinstall will help much here?
