Please close as I am no longer experiencing this problem. As I have:
- reduced make -9 to make -$(sysctl -n hw.ncpu)  # 9 to 8
- updated to r283037  # patches to clang
- and ensured that the various worlds were built when the system was idle and
isolated from other uses.
(Perhaps a fluke, or something ugly lurking)
