One was the mode had to be set to "auto", and the other was to make sure that "/dev/sysmouse" was being used. I think something else was mentioned about mouse0 or mouse1, not sure. Anyway, here's a copy of my mouse settings from /etc/X11/XF86Config: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Works great for me, hope it helps you.
