Yes, but you can still telnet to it (assuming it's running an external mail
daemon and it's not firewalled).  You can even send email.  Here's a telnet
to the localhost sendmail on my box:

[noackjr@patriarch:~] $ telnet localhost 25
<snip>
220 patriarch.dnsalias.org ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.3/8.12.3; Tue, 25 Jun 2002
14:07:57 -0500 (CDT)
