I had the exact same problem several nights ago. The answer is, as root,
edit the file /usr/local/linux-jdk1.3.0/jre/lib/jvm.cfg. In this file you
will find a list of options. These options list JVMs in order that they
will be used. THe fix is to place the option "-classic" first in the list
and either delete or comment out the last option in the list which should
be "-classic"
