It would be better to install the package with the -p option:
pkg_add -p /usr/local latex.tgz. There is no simple fix for xdvi or
dvips (I will replace the packages at freefall).

This is because the package is bogus.

The best solution is to get dvips and xdvi in the ports directory and
to install from the sources.

pre-build fonts may not be suited to your printer. Installing from the
sources allows you to specify the printer mode.
