well, with the newer version of the code, patched to compile on 4.1, the
dell inspiron 3800 is back to making the annoying beep, but actually
trying to play a sound (with xmms for example) results in the interrupt
timing out.

here's the relevant info it's printing out when this occurs...

pcm0: <ESS Technology Maestro-3E> port 0xd800-0xd8ff mem
0xfaffe000-0xfaffffff irq 5
at device 8.0 on pci0
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: wp_wrapu() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: wp_wrapu() timed out.

<this goes on for a while>

<then a bunch of these>

pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.

<then i get annoyed and unload the module>

pcm0: wp_wrapu() timed out.
pcm0: apu_setindex() timed out.
pcm0: wp_wrapu() timed out.
pcm0: detached

at least it's back to making noise ;-)
