we HAVE a ports management system. it's called "the ports tree." in
debian, you need a frontend to the database of packages available.
hence, apt. linux people tend to feel more comfortable using guis to do
system administration, hence aptitude and some of the spectacular X
programs.

in freebsd, if you want to know if nmap is in the tree, just do 'locate
nmap'! or make search key='nmap'. or the WAY underutilized
/usr/ports/Tools/scripts/portsearch.

probably the closest thing to the apt system is misc/porteasy. if you
wish to have an ncurses front-end to make, by all means write it. but
don't hop onto a list whining, and then decide that qualifies you to
choose who belongs here and who doesn't.
