I was also opposed to it; but it's been committed, and we've
quarrelled about it long enough, so I suggest we just leave it in and
stop arguing.

Nonetheless, the patch is a kludge and the wording of the man page is
clumsy at best. I'm working on correcting this (and changing the -f
option to -o, which others have pointed out as the Right Thing)
